The Allan Hancock College rodeo team hosted its home rodeo in Santa Maria over the weekend, drawing collegiate riders and ropers to the Elks Event Center.
Now in its second year, the Jim Glines Memorial College Rodeo featured two days of competition, including roughstock, roping and barrel racing, with Saturday’s events serving as qualifiers for Sunday’s short round.
Competing schools included Allan Hancock College, Cal Poly, Cuesta College, Bakersfield College, Fresno State, Coalinga College, College of the Redwoods, Feather River College and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Hancock College’s rodeo team was formed in 2019 with major support from James “Jim” Glines, a Santa Maria Valley native and longtime rodeo backer who said at the time that he envisioned the college eventually hosting its own intercollegiate rodeo.
After Glines died in February 2025, the Hancock College rodeo team and its supporters named the event in his honor.
Among the competitors Saturday was Paige Taylor, a sophomore at Feather River College in Quincy who said Santa Maria was her hometown. Taylor said she did well in barrel racing but had “tough luck” in breakaway roping earlier in the day.

“I had a runner and just missed my calf on the end of the arena,” she said. “You get your shot and take it, and if you don’t take it, you’re just kind of running laps.”
Taylor said she appreciated the atmosphere around the event and the support behind Hancock College’s program.
“I like how the whole community comes together,” Taylor said. “There are a lot of people that volunteer because the Hancock team is small, and I like how big they make the rodeo.”

By Saturday evening, a few hundred spectators were spread across the general admission bleachers, box seats and VIP section as competitors took part in bareback riding and saddle bronc riding before the night concluded with bull riding.
This story will be updated with results from the Jim Glines Memorial College Rodeo when they become available.
