Dos Pueblos boys golf pulled out a tight Channel League victory over Ventura High on Tuesday at Buenaventura Golf Course.
The Chargers dominated down the stretch and ended with a team score of 376 to beat out the Cougars’ score of 387 on the par-70 course.
“The final score does not do the match justice about how back and forth the match was,” Dos Pueblos head coach Kevin Ahlers said. “We knew that the Cougars were a very skilled team at home and that the match could come down to a single stroke.
“Senior captain Colt Roberts gave a pre-match speech about staying focused and not letting a bad shot affect your round. The Cougars took an early lead for the front nine, but the Chargers were able to as a team finish a seven over on the back nine to secure the win.”
Connor Nightingale led the late push for Dos Pueblos, finishing the day with two straight birdies to finish with a team-best score of a one-over-par 71.
He was joined by teammates Parker Hickman (73), Colt Roberts (76), Coulter Jay (77) and Orlando Ramirez Gijon (79).
“This is what I would call a team win,” Ahlers said. “Everyone did their job, and we had all five guys in the 70s. We knew that was what it would take for us to give ourselves a competitive chance.”
The Chargers (13-5, 3-1 Channel League) will host Buena for Senior Day on Thursday.
San Marcos 394, Rio Mesa 461
The Royals remained undefeated in league play with a win over the Spartans on Tuesday at Santa Barbara Golf Club, a par-70 course.
San Marcos’ Adam Kabaretti was the match’s medalist after tallying a four-over-par 74. He was followed by Nate Duva (77), Miles Boyatt (80), Talon Cyr (81) and Tyler Gunn (82).
“[Kabaretti] was fresh off a trip to New Orleans with the San Marcos Jazz Band, where he was awarded the Maestro award for Outstanding Musicianship and Solo. He is an outstanding teammate, golfer and musician. It was great to see him play well today,” San Marcos head coach Jeff Ashton said.
“We also had contributions from a group of sophomores with Miles Boyatt leading the way with his best 18-hole round at Muni with an 80. Miles made a triple bogey on the first hole, but maintained his composure and played well the rest of the way.”
The Royals, who are 4-0 in league play, will take on crosstown rival Santa Barbara High on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Sandpiper Golf Course.
