Dos Pueblos junior Kellan Cotter broke a 40-year-old school record in the 200 meters and senior distance runner Phil Contakes won two individual events and was part of a winning relay team, helping the Chargers earn a share of the boys varsity team title at the Santa Barbara County Track & Field Championships on a rainy Saturday at Righetti High.

Dos Pueblos and Righetti both finished with 92 points, one point ahead of San Marcos. Righetti captured the varsity girls championships with 105 points, edging out Dos Pueblos which scored 103.

Cotter ran a personal-best of 21.81, finishing second behind Righetti’s Wyatt Daniels’ PR time of 21.79. Cotter also posted a PR in the 400 (49.39) and was runneup to Daniels, who won in 48.75.

“Kellan is a true scholar of the sport and sets a good example to the rest of the team with his diligence and work ethic,” said DP coach Rosina Garcia. “ I’m so glad his hard work is paying off.”

Contakes won county titles in the 1600, 3200, and the 4×800 relay. The team Ashton Smedley,  Contakes, Owen Abbott, and Cullen Gully set a school record of 7:53.93.

“This is a testament to the depth of our distance program, and I’m excited to see what they will continue to do in the post-season,” said Garcia.

Contakes won the 1600 in a PR of 4:20.53 and captured the 3200 in 10:06.12. Smedley took second in a PR of 10:06.90 and Ayden Kaufmann of Orcutt Academy was third in 10:34.33. DP’s Ian McMurtry finished second in the 1600 (4:23.76) and Noah Barthel of Lompoc was third (4:24.32).

The Righetti boys also posted a win in the 4×100 relay, with David Rosas, Daniels, Nery Sanguilan and Aiden Zozow clocking 43.69.

The Dos Pueblos girls got wins from freshman Makyla Watt in the long jump (17-3.25) and junior Alix Hollingsworth in the varsity discus, throwing a PR of 117-0.5. Senior Harper Wolfe Lyons made the podium in all of her events: long jump, high jump, and 300 hurdles.

San Marcos

In a battle between the top two boys 300 hurdlers in the county, Logan Patterson Deakyne of San Marcos edged state 7th-ranked Damien Adams of Lompoc. Patterson Deakyne was clocked in 38.99 and Adams crossed the finish line in 39.05. Luc Lewis of Santa Ynez was third in 39.59.

“Logan ran a really good half of a race,” said coach Marilyn Hantgin. “His form looked good and he was smooth. The second half wasn’t his cleanest, but he found a way to win.”

TJ Deakyne was a double winner for the Royals, taking the triple jump with a distance of 41-8 and clearing 6-4 in the high jump. He finished third in the long jump (20-4.75).

“The conditions weren’t the best today, due to the rain for the later events. TJ found a way to do well in his events,” said Hantgin.

In the boys pole vault Dalton Shupe (12-0) and Myles Gonzalez (11-6) went 1-2 and Collin Emmerson (10-6) was fourth.

“These vaulters have been consistent all year, today was a good indication of their hard work,” said Hantgin.

On the girls side, Autumn Richardson ran a personal best of 5:18 in the 1600 to earn fifth place and Layla Llewellyn was fourth in the 800 with a personal best of 2:25.

Hantgin said most of her varsity runners competed in the Frosh/Soph Division.

Santa Barbara

Senior Malachi Johnston threw a lifetime best of 53-8.5 in winning the shot put and captured the discus with a throw of 139-10.

“Malachi has been so steady all year at shot. It was great to have discus fall into place for him today too, so he could repeat as the county champion in both,” said coach Olivia Perdices.

Shea Gannon won her first county title at the varsity level, capturing the triple jump at 33-4. She also took third in the long jump in a lifetime best of 16-0.5

“Great performance, especially with the rain at triple jump,” said Perdices.

The girls 4×800 meter relay of Ailey Alexander, Olivia Arevalo, Sydney Burgoyne and Itzel Rayos Jimenez won in a season best 10:19.07.

“I’m so proud of how all four of them competed today. Every one of them took the baton and fully committed,” said Perdices.

Cate

Sophomore Sloan Harwell won the varsity girls 200 title in 25.46.

Also for the Rams, junior Sophie Blank finished third in the 1600 and fifth in the 800. Juniors Jackson Steele finished fourth in the 400 and Ati Zwieback was fifth in the 1600. Senior Gwen McTigue set a PR and placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. 

Carpinteria

Vivian Huskins brought a county title back to Carpinteria as she won the girls 100 meters in 12.51, lowering her school record by one hundredth of second.

“Vivian ran a solid race to pull away in the last 20 meters. She has been running consistently well throughout the season and is ready to move into the post season on a roll,” said coach Van Latham.

Huskins took third in the 200 in 25.59.

This also lowers her school record by entire one hundredths of a second.. She also finished third in the 200 meters with another PR of 25.59. This also lowers her school record. 

The Warrior girls finished second in the 4×400 relay. The team of Isla Moore, Giarys Gomez, Izzy Scott, Kaydence Gardner were clocked in 4:17.41.

Other podium finishers for the Warriors were: Marely Avalos (second in the girls shot put, 31-0), Leighla Richter (third in the girls 100 hurdles, 18.66), Izzy Scott (third in girls 300 hurdles, 50.40), the boys 4×800 relay team of Jaiden Ambriz, Sam Martinez, Aaron Ortega and Max Soto (third in a season-best of 8:35.96), Owen Reeves second in the boys 100 (PR of 11.46) and Eli Perez (third in the shot put with a PR of 45-4.75).

“Eli has been making impressive gains in his shot the last couple cowers. He improved his PR by almost two feet at the Russell Cup last week and now another two of improvement today,” said Latham.

Providence

Elsabet Schlobohm recorded a personal best of of 47.31 in winning the girls 300-meter hurdles.
