San Marcos boys tennis pulled out a dramatic CIF-SS Div. 5 championship win over San Clemente on Friday at The Claremont Club.

After the two sides were tied at 9-9 at the end of play, the Royals captured the victory due to an 85-81 advantage in games won.

Friday’s CIF-SS title was especially sweet for San Marcos, which finished as the CIF-SS Div. 3 Runner-Up last season to Cate.

The Royal pairings of Levi Reece/Nico Holve and Jacob Cantrell/Eliot Gray were dominant and set the tone in doubles action, as each duo went 3-0 on the day.

“They held the lead throughout every set and showed impressive control,” San Marcos head coach Emily Carver said of her top doubles teams.

Meanwhile, Will Schneider paired up with Cade Campbell and Gavin Mast on line three and secured what proved to be critical games won.

The Royals got off to a slow start in singles action, dropping the first three matches.

However, Dylan Cotich, Hudson Chossek and Braden Stewart secured one win apiece to tie the game at 9-9 and send it to the games won tiebreaker.
