Alfred Manuel Romero

Alfred “Big Al, Little Big Shot” Romero was born April 16, 1935 in Santa Barbara to Barbara Martinez and Fred Romero. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on May 13, 2026, at the age of 91.

Alfred lived life on his own terms and was always on the go. He painted at the Lompoc Recreation Center and Solvang Senior Center; hunted for treasures at yard sales and thrift stores; and made regular trips to Michaels for jewelry-making supplies — though the jewelry never stayed with him long, as he loved giving it all away.

When he wasn’t out and about, you could find him at home watching westerns or listening to music. For the last five years, breakfast at Ellen’s Danish Pancake House in Buellton was a sacred daily ritual.

Alfred had a passion for adventure and never slowed down. He made biannual trips to Las Vegas, traveled to see old friends who had moved away, and even made the trek to Dodger Stadium to cheer on his favorite team.

The Chumash Casino was his home away from home, and those who knew him will always remember the sight of him in his fedora, settled in at his favorite machines.

Alfred is survived by his sister Grace Romero Pacheco; his longtime companion Barbara “Bab” Steuer; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Rachel Romero, Mary Pendleton, and Norma Camastra; brother Rudy Romero; and his first and second wives Eleanor Romero and Laurel S. Romero.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 22 at Oak Hill Cemetery, 2560 Baseline Ave., Solvang.
