A 17-year-old Pioneer Valley High School student died after an accident in Three Rivers near Sequoia National Park last week.

The girl, Andrea Diaz Mondragon, reportedly slipped into the water Friday, but attempts to rescue her were not successful, leading to her drowning.

She was with family members and friends when the accident happened.

The girl had just completed her junior year at the high school in northeast Santa Maria and was preparing to start her senior year in August, according to a GoFundMe page, “In Loving Memory of Andrea Diaz Mondragon.”

“She dreamed of becoming a nurse and was passionate about helping others. Andrea loved to dance, spending time with her family and friends, and bringing joy to those around her. She was known for being outgoing, strong, brave, and caring,” the GoFundMe site says.

“Above all, Andrea deeply loved her family. She cherished her mother, father, and two older brothers, and was always there for her younger sister, whom she loved and protected.

“Her beautiful spirit touched countless lives, and her loss has left her family, friends, and classmates heartbroken.”

As of late Tuesday morning, more than $4,500 has been raised toward the $9,000 goal.

The funds will help cover funeral expenses, according to organizers.

This is the second tragedy for the Santa Maria Valley high school community this month.

On June 7, five teenagers were killed and a 24-year-old man was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 135 at South Miller Street. That crash is under investigation.
