As Independence Day approaches, the Lompoc Police Department reports it has already seen an increase in reports of illegal fireworks throughout the city.

To help protect the community and reduce the risk of fires, injuries, and property damage, the Police Department is reminding residents of Lompoc’s fireworks regulations and the proper way to report illegal firework activity

Within the city of Lompoc, only Safe & Sane fireworks are permitted, and they may only be discharged between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.

The use or possession of any other fireworks is illegal and poses a significant risk of injury, fires, and property damage.

“The Police Department has received an increase in fireworks-related calls to our 9-1-1 Dispatch Center,” law enforcement officials said. “While we encourage residents to report illegal fireworks, 9-1-1 should only be used to report emergencies involving an immediate threat to life or property.”

To report illegal fireworks in Lompoc, residents are encouraged to use the “Fireworks” reporting feature available in the Lompoc Police Department mobile app or call the department’s non-emergency line, 805-736-2341.

This year, the Lompoc Police Department will also use drones to assist officers in identifying locations where illegal fireworks are being discharged.

Individuals responsible for the use of illegal fireworks may be subject to citations of up to $1,500.Â
