Construction on Goleta’s highly anticipated new train depot is now expected to be “substantially complete” before the end of the year, city spokesperson Kelly Hoover told Noozhawk. 

The new full-service train station was originally expected to open this summer at 27 S. La Patera Lane, next to the existing Amtrak platform. 

The station is set to include a lobby, electronic ticketing area, waiting room, café, community room, restrooms and storage areas. It will serve as a multimodal transportation center to increase ridership, the city has said.

The setback comes after “numerous factors,” including a delay in procuring certain materials, Hoover added. 

Construction on the $32-million and approximately 9,000-square-foot building began almost two years ago. It is considered a milestone for the city as its first building project constructed from the ground up, Noozhawk previously reported.

The existing building at the site was demolished to make way for the new train station. It was formerly operated by Direct Relief before Goleta bought it in 2018, Noozhawk previously reported.

It also seeks to improve bus connections and add bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Funding for the new building included $18.6 million from the state Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program, which was awarded to the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments.
