A 47-year-old man was arrested near Summerland early Friday morning after allegedly threatening to kill his girlfriend and pouring lighter fluid on her, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jason Tucker was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies at around 3:05 a.m. after an extensive search, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Raquel Zick.

A woman — who Zick said was identified as Tucker’s girlfriend — called 9-1-1 at around 8:17 p.m. Thursday to report that Tucker allegedly “swung a large wooden stake” at her head and threatened her while at a homeless encampment along Highway 101 in the Summerland area.

“The victim fled the encampment and called 9-1-1. Tucker allegedly followed her, threatened to kill her before law enforcement arrived, and poured Tiki torch lighter fluid on her, causing her to fear for her life,” Zick said.

The woman was treated by medical crews on the scene, per Zick.

Deputies searched for Tucker in the Ortega Hill area near the southbound Highway 101 and the Sheffield Drive on-ramp.

Emergency radio traffic indicated the search was expanded to the railroad tracks and Lookout Park.

Tucker was arrested without incident at the homeless encampment hours later, just after 3 a.m.

He was booked at the Santa Barbara Main Jail on a $100,000 bail for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault with caustic chemicals or flammable substances, criminal threats, and intimidating or attempting to prevent a victim or witness from reporting a crime, Zick said.
