An arrest was made Friday afternoon following a string of residential and vehicle burglaries this week at a student housing complex on the Mesa in Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Officers responded at about 3 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a suspicious person who appeared to be tampering with vehicles at the Beach City apartment complex at Cliff Drive and Loma Alta, Lt. Ethan Ragsdale said.

The suspect fled and could not be found, Ragsdale said, but an investigation revealed that 14 unlocked apartments had been burglarized and two vehicles had been stolen.

Officers located multiple items of stolen property in the area and recovered the two stolen vehicles, Ragsdale said. He added that multiple victims came forward to identify stolen property and to provide statements.

“Detectives further investigated the case and identified a suspect, and a judge approved an arrest warrant for 19-year-old Ryder Jay Gage, a Santa Barbara resident,” Ragsdale said.

At about 5 p.m. Friday, officers were on a call on the 100 block of West Carrillo Street when they observed Gage walking on the sidewalk.

Gage was arrested without incident, Ragsdale said, and was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of burglary, vehicle theft, vandalism and grand theft.

He remained in custody without bail Friday night.
