An allegedly intoxicated man who trespassed onto private property in Santa Barbara on Saturday night landed in the hospital with stab wounds after a confrontation with the resident.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., the Santa Barbara Police Department Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call regarding a reported stabbing at a residence on the 600 block of West Islay Street, Lt. Antonio Montojo said.

Officers responded and located an injured individual, identified as 27-year-old Edward Bumb. 

Montojo said that an intoxicated Bumb had unlawfully trespassed onto private property.

“During an ensuing confrontation with the resident, Bumb became physically assaultive, and the resident used a knife in self-defense,” Montojo said. 

Bumb was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for medical treatment, Montojo added.

Details on his condition were not available.

Police will forward a report about the incident to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office for review and a decision about what criminal charges, if any, to file against Bumb.

Investigators determined it was an isolated incident, and that there is no known threat to the public, Montojo added.
