County firefighters burned about an acre at the UC Santa Barbara Lagoon on Monday for a prescribed burn meant to control non-native grasses in the area.
The burn, which was coordinated with County Fire, UCSB and the Air Pollution Control District, started Monday morning and was completed just before 2 p.m.
Smoke was visible from Goleta and the campus, where classes for the fall quarter begin next week.
This particular prescribed burn was conducted at the lagoon near Campus Point to control non-native plants and help establish native bluff scrub vegetation, according to APCD and County Fire.
APCD set up a portable device to monitor air quality conditions during the burn, said spokesperson Lyz Bantilan. Burns are typically delayed or rescheduled if weather conditions are unfavorable for the smoke to disperse.
The region had good-to-moderate air quality over the weekend due to smoke impacts from the Timber Fire burning in Big Sur and the Getty Fire burning in Los Angeles.
As of Monday, the air quality forecast was good (green) for the week across most of the county, with moderate conditions in the Santa Maria Valley.
Residents can check conditions at the APCD website and the EPA’s AirNow Fire and Smoke Map, which had neighborhood-level readings.
