Dos Pueblos girls tennis used a dominant singles attack to pull out a 10-8 rivalry win over Santa Barbara High on Thursday in Goleta.
The Chargers pulled in eight of the nine singles points to earn the win, while the Dons were in control in doubles with seven victories.
The two sides went into the third round of play knotted at 6-6, but Dos Pueblos earned four of the final six points to secure the crosstown win.
“In an early season display of skill and fight from both teams, this matchup promises to be a tight contest this season for the top spot in Channel League,” Santa Barbara High head coach Shane Carmody said.
The Dos Pueblos singles tandem of Atria Husein, Zella Cassidy and Adyha Reddy dominated from start to finish, holding Santa Barbara to just six games won in eight sets.
Meanwhile, the Chargers’ doubles points came courtesy of Nicollette Pfeifer/Addy Barth and Nikita Fisher/Taylor Dannemiller.
The Santa Barbara High duo of Kate Hashbarger/Lucy Kronberg was dominant from start to finish, going 3-0 on the day and surrendering just two games.
Meanwhile, Kana Wolf/Violet Marr earned a pair of doubles wins for the Dons, and Sky O’Reilly Thomson picked up one doubles victory with Stella Malia and one with Kate Krautman.
Ryan Briggs tallied the lone singles victory for Santa Barbara High in the defeat.
Cate 17, Villanova Prep 1
The Rams cruised to a rout of Villanova Prep in Thursday’s league opener.
It was a complete team effort for Cate, with Elizabeth Jayich, Jade Wang, Ivy Huang, Elly Edwards and Evita Ferrone all earning singles victories.
Meanwhile, the Rams did not surrender a single game in doubles play.
Gwendi Rogers/Josie Goldhirsh and Chelsea Newlove/Kiki Chang each went 3-0 on the day, while Lisa Hasebe, Claire Tang and Edie Abbott also contributed to the doubles success.
“It’s not often you see an entire doubles card with no games surrendered, so I’m obviously very proud of the way our doubles unit took care of business,” Cate head coach Trevor Thorpe said.
“Both the hunger to take every game and the grittiness to battle back that I saw from the team today will serve us well come playoff time.”
