Dos Pueblos football dominated on the defensive end en route to a 22-6 win over Crescenta Valley to round out non-league play on Friday at Scott O’Leary Stadium in Goleta.
The Chargers are now 3-2 on the season heading into the bye week. They will begin Tri-County League play on the road against Hueneme on Friday, Oct. 2.
Both teams got off to a slow start, as the game remained a 0-0 tie for the vast majority of the opening quarter.
The Chargers broke the drought with less than a minute left in the first when Grady Felix scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak on 4th and goal. The extra-point attempt was missed to make it a 6-0 lead.
Crescenta Valley responded with a strong drive into DP territory, but the Charger defense forced a turnover on downs to halt the momentum.
The 6-0 lead remained for most of the second quarter until the Chargers worked deep into Crescenta Valley territory and Felix found Soren Smedley on a short slant-route touchdown to make it a 13-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the half.
Dos Pueblos’ ensuing kickoff caught the Falcons off guard, and the Chargers jumped on it to gain another chance to extend the lead before the break.
They did just that, using a few plays to get into field-goal range and turning it over to Tiago Carmona, who nailed the field goal to take a 16-0 lead into halftime.
That score held until early in the fourth quarter, when Crescenta Valley secured a short rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 16-6 with just under eight minutes left to play.
The Chargers responded with their first scoring drive of the half as Felix led the team down the field before scampering into the end zone for a 20-yard rushing touchdown and a 22-6 advantage.
The Dos Pueblos defense then secured one more stop to put the finishing touches on the non-league win.
