Santa Barbara High girls tennis continued its strong Channel League season with a 12-6 rivalry win over San Marcos on Tuesday in Santa Barbara.

The Dons completed the season sweep of the Royals with the victory and improved their Channel League record to 6-1.

Santa Barbara High freshman Keren Monroy went 2-1 in singles play with a pair of 6-2 victories, while Hali Wight rounded out the Dons’ singles points with two wins of her own.

“Monroy kept it together after a tough first round and won her next two rounds, not playing her best tennis, but doing enough to stay in front in the scoreline at every changeover,” Santa Barbara High head coach Shane Carmody said. “[Wight’s] first two rounds weren’t flawless… Wight was too strong to be phased and maintained the lead in both rounds.”

San Marcos’ Tate Jaeger was dominant in the singles lineup, going 3-0 to account for half of her team’s scoring.

In doubles action, Santa Barbara High senior Sky O’Reilly and junior Ryan Briggs came together for a 3-0 sweep of their matches. Meanwhile, senior Lucy Kronberg and junior Irish Heckes also won all three of their matchups.

“[O’Reilly and Briggs] were solid and impressive today, figuring out ways to win when way ahead as well as ways to win when trailing and when stealing back the lead again after losing it,” Carmody said. “There was little the three SM pairs could do to get into rhythm with Iris swinging freely from the baseline and setting Lucy up perfect for plays at net with her deep groundstrokes that gave Lucy the short replies.”

The Dons’ senior duo of Violet Marr and Kana Wolf rounded out the team’s scoring with two victories.

“After getting just two games in that opening set, both Wolf and Marr were hungry for revenge and played strong the rest of the day, starting stronger and maintaining the lead to get the job done,” Carmody said.

Santa Barbara High (6-5, 6-1 Channel League) will be on the road against Camarillo High on Friday.
