Gary Steven Horwald was born on Jan. 12, 1958 to Sylvan and Jaqueline Horwald in Buffalo, New York. He moved to California at six months old and spent his childhood growing up in Woodland Hills.
After attending UC Santa Barbara, Gary made Santa Barbara his home, where he and his wife Carolyn raised their three daughters.
Above all, Gary was a family man who took great pride in his girls. He coached them in youth sports, from T-ball to soccer, and loved documenting their lives as they grew up. His family was at the center of everything he did.
Gary had a great sense of humor and loved making people laugh. He was a bit of a prankster, especially with his New York relatives, and always found a way to bring laughter to those around him.
He had a lifelong love of motorcycles, music and adventure. Whether heading to the desert with friends, hitting the slopes, spending time on the water, or vacationing in Hawaii and enjoying piña coladas, Gary loved exploring and living life to the fullest.
He especially enjoyed trips to Lake Nacimiento. At home, he could often be found playing his guitar or making his famous steak and mashed potatoes.
Gary dedicated much of his professional life to the city of Santa Barbara, where he served as its fleet services manager.
In his later years, one of Gary’s greatest joys was being “G-Pa” to his three grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and watching his family grow.
Gary is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughters, Katie McClenathen (Matthew), Jenna Chaffee (Austin), and Kara; brother Mark Kohen (Marsha); grandchildren Dean, Grant and Leah; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his love of family, his sense of humor, and his fun-loving spirit.
True to his life motto, “Eat Dessert First,” Gary believed in enjoying the good things in life, and he will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Parkinson Association of Santa Barbara in Gary’s memory.
