At Santa Barbara Charter School (SBCS), we start from a simple idea: the child is the curriculum. Every child arrives curious, capable, and already themselves, and our program is developed to support each child exactly where they are. As a free, public charter school serving Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, Santa Ynez, and Lompoc, we welcome learners from anywhere in the area.
Question: What is Santa Barbara Charter School’s educational philosophy?

Answer: SBCS is a caregiver participation school built around a child-centered, materials-based approach — we believe children learn best by constructing meaning from their experiences. Our curriculum follows Common Core State Standards, blended with Montessori, Waldorf, and Humanistic elements and grounded in the theory of multiple intelligences. We teach using culturally responsive, anti-bias practices throughout. We nurture the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of the child and help students achieve academic goals through multi-sensory experiences.
Q: How does SBCS prepare students to succeed academically?
A: We prepare students by keeping their intrinsic motivation intact — children construct their own meaning and follow their own passions, rather than memorizing facts for a test. That foundation prepares them to think critically and stay engaged learners wherever life takes them next. We track each child’s growth through student-led conferences and portfolios alongside state testing, and in early 2026, our authorizing district, SBUSD, renewed our charter for a full seven years — the longest term available, and a strong vote of confidence in our outcomes.Â
Q: How does the admissions lottery work?
A: We welcome families from Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, Lompoc, Santa Maria, and other neighboring areas. We hold a public lottery each winter, with rules that follow state mandates and best practices. Our waitlists move throughout the year, so we always encourage interested families to apply and get on the list at sbcharter.org/application-for-enrollment.

Q: What programs do you offer?
A: We offer two paths: a classroom-based program (TK–6th) with approximately 225 students and our HomeBased Partnership (TK–8th), a homeschool option with about 60 students where caregivers and teachers partner to design a program tailored to each student while maintaining state standards. Each classroom-based student is also guaranteed a spot in our After School Program (ASP), combining tutoring, enrichment, and free play daily from 7:15am to 5:30pm, with scholarships available.
Q: How do you balance screen time and technology with hands-on learning?
A: Tech is a tool, far from the main event. Our students use computers, tablets, and Chromebooks for research, writing, coding, and creative projects to enhance — not replace — our hands-on, multi-sensory learning. In one recent after-school enrichment program, students built their own computers as part of a coding program run by knowledgeable caregivers.
Q: How does SBCS make sure every student feels a sense of belonging?
A: Belonging is central to how we do things. We’re grounded in Anti-Bias, Anti-Racist practices and strive to ensure every student feels safe, valued, and empowered. We meet children where they are developmentally, so every child is known and cared for as a whole person — not just a student, but an active, contributing member of our community, nurtured by a supportive environment that lets them thrive just as they are.
