A week after a 3-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle while crossing State Street in Santa Barbara, she remained in critical condition on Monday amid promising signs but also some uncertainty.
The toddler was crossing the road with her family in a marked crosswalk shortly before 10 a.m. Oct. 18 when she was hit by the vehicle, which was eastbound on State Street, police said.
The girl received emergency treatment at the scene before being taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. She was later transferred to a specialized hospital.
“Ava is receiving around-the-clock care from an incredible team of doctors and nurses,” the family wrote in an update on their GoFundMe page. “She remains in critical condition, and we are taking things moment by moment.
“There have been some small, encouraging signs, and we are holding onto each one while knowing there is still so much we don’t know. We are waiting for a clearer picture of what the road ahead may look like, holding hope while making room for the uncertainty that lies ahead.”
The family also expressed appreciation for an outpouring of support for the parents, brother and extended family.
“The kindness, generosity, care, concern, and outpouring of love from both our closest and widest circles have been nothing short of lifesaving,” they wrote. “Every person who has reached out, donated, or offered support is helping us move through the worst tragedy of our lives.
“Even in the midst of so much uncertainty, we feel held, supported, and less alone. Our gratitude is immeasurable.”
They signed the update “With love, Jess & Rob + Milo + Bear the Dog, and our strong, brave, and Mighty Ava.”
“We know the road ahead may be long, and we are ready to show up for our girl and surround her with all the love and support she needs. Through all of this, we are continually reminded of just how much strength she already holds,” the family said.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you for holding us in your hearts, prayers, and homes. The love surrounding our family has meant more than we can express. We are taking this one day at a time.”
In addition to the GoFundMe, which had raised more than $138,000 as of Monday night for the self-employed parents, the family has created an Amazon wish list, available on the GoFundMe page, for household essentials to help while a grandparent remains in Santa Barbara with Ava’s brother.
Officers with the Santa Barbara Police Department are investigating the incident, but they said at the time that drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
Additionally, the driver, whose name hasn’t been released, reportedly remained at the scene, authorities said. The driver and a passenger in the vehicle were not injured.
On Monday, Santa Barbara Police Cmdr. Nathan Beltran said they don’t have any additional details to release about the investigation.
