Blind Fitness is celebrating the power of community collaboration as its team of blind and low-vision (BLV) athletes and volunteer sighted guides prepares to participate in the Santa Barbara Half Marathon & 5K, Sunday, Nov. 8.
Through the generosity of the Santa Barbara Half Marathon & 5K and the Santa Barbara Running Association, race registrations are being sponsored for Team Blind Fitness athletes and their volunteer guides, helping remove financial barriers and expand opportunities for inclusive participation, organizers said.
The celebration begins Saturday, Nov. 7, with a Pre-Race Team Lunch, hosted at the Braille Institute of Santa Barbara, which is donating the use of its auditorium for the gathering.
The luncheon will offer an opportunity for athletes, guides and volunteers to connect, build friendships, and celebrate their collective achievements, organizers said.
A Q&A panel with blind and low-vision athletes and their sighted guides will highlight their personal experiences, the importance of teamwork, and the relationships that develop through inclusive sports.
“These partnerships are a beautiful reminder of what we can accomplish when our community comes together,” said Tania Isaac-Dutton, executive director of Blind Fitness.
“It’s not just about participating in a race. It’s about creating opportunities, building meaningful connections, and ensuring that blind and low vision individuals have the support and encouragement to pursue their goals,” she said.
On Nov. 8, Team Blind Fitness will join runners and walkers, demonstrating that fitness, recreation, and community participation are opportunities everyone deserves to experience, event organizers said.
Blind Fitness thanks Braille Institute of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Half Marathon & 5K, Santa Barbara Running Association, and the volunteers whose generosity and commitment help bring this experience to life.
Blind Fitness is a Santa Barbara County-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to empower blind and low-vision individuals through adaptive fitness, outdoor recreation, and community advocacy.
