Elizabeth Ann Sweet (Annie DuPar) was born on Aug. 4, 1939 near Midland, Michigan, to Robert and Frances Sweet.
When she was in her teens, her family moved to California, and Ann graduated from Pasadena High School in 1957.
Following high school she completed nursing training at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. As a new nurse she took a job at Arcadia Methodist Hospital in Monrovia, California.
On Feb. 10, 1962, Ann married Paul Kendall DuPar (Ken) at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church in Monrovia. Just a few months after getting married, they moved to Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama, where Ken served in the army and Ann continued working as a nurse.
In 1964 after returning from Alabama, Ken and Ann had their first child, Robert “Bob” Kendall DuPar . In 1969 they moved to Santa Barbara, where Ken pursued his career as a computer programmer with Burroughs Corporation, which later became Unisys.
In 1971, Ken and Ann had their second child, Thomas Edward “Ted” DuPar, followed by Richard Scott “Scott” DuPar in 1972. This would make at least two generations of all-male DuPars.
Ann would take classes for the next 20 years to keep her nursing license current, but her true calling was to be a stay-at-home mom. She took tremendous pride and satisfaction in her family, and she invested deeply in them.
Ann was a dedicated and faithful Christian. The foundation of her life was her relationship with and love for Jesus, through which she found tremendous joy, fulfillment and peace.
She served her Lord through Bible Study Fellowship, children’s ministry and youth ministry at her church, and various other bible study groups.
Over the years she counseled, mentored and discipled countless youth and adults. For 50 years she and Ken would host small group bible studies, youth groups, and church gatherings in their home.
Ann loved to cook and bless people through her hospitality and love. Everyone loved her food and gracious spirit.
After generations of DuPar boys, God blessed Ken and Ann with nine grandchildren (eight girls and one boy). It was clear that God had an incredible sense of humor as Annie finally got the chance to grandmother daughters as well.
She was an amazing grandmother and was consistently available and invested in each of her grandchildren’s lives.
Her husband Ken passed in May of 2019. Four years later she went to live at Mission Villa and then The Californian due to health challenges. She received wonderful care at both facilities, and her social life thrived as she developed friendships with fellow-residents and remained very active with family and church friends.
On Jan. 15, 2026, God chose to take her home. She finished fighting the good fight, having faithfully served her Lord and family, and was joyfully received into the loving arms of Jesus.
Ann is preceded in death by her husband Ken; parents Robert and Frances; and brothers Bob and Tom “Sat Guru” Sweet.
She is survived by her sons Bob (Denise), Ted (Rhonda) and Scott (Rachel); grandchildren Amanda DuPar Drewes (Jeff), Aubrey DuPar, Samantha DuPar Schertz (Robbie), Emma, Holly, Emelia, Chloe, Grace and Seth.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 14 at Santa Barbara Community Church, 1002 Cieneguitas Road, Santa Barbara. All are welcome.
