A woman riding a bicycle was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle on the western edge of Santa Maria earlier this week, Santa Maria police said Thursday.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 5 a.m. Monday to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and bicyclist in the 1300 block of West Main Street, police said in response to a request for information from Noozhawk.

Arriving officers found a 38-year-old bicyclist down in the roadway and suffering from critical injuries.

She was transported by medical helicopter to a local hospital, but died due to her injuries, police said.

The vehicle driver remained at the scene and no arrests have occurred, Acting Sgt. Seann Woessner said.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor at this time, police said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

Police also said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the Police Department at 805.928.3781, ext. 2297.

Police have not released the bicyclist’s name.

However, family members have identified the woman as Cassandra “Cassie” Odom of Santa Maria in a GoFundMe page aiming to raise $7,500 to help the family pay for funeral costs.

That page can be found by clicking here.

“We as a family are all still in shock,” a cousin of Odom’s wrote on the fundraising page. “I am starting this fundraiser to help my aunt and give her some relief. She lost a child and I can only imagine the hurt and pain she’s going through. Cassie was a loving and caring person. She loved her kids and grandkids so much.”
