Bishop Diego’s CIF State Tournament run came to an end at second-seeded L.A. Roosevelt, 54-45, in a Division 5 second-round basketball game on Thursday in Boyle Heights.

It was a two-point game until Roosevelt capitalized on turnovers and pulled away in the fourth quarter. The Rough Riders outscored the Cardinals 15-8 in the last eight minutes.

Matthew Cunningham was hot early for Bishop, scoring 11 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter to help the Cardinals take a 17-15 lead.

Roosevelt led 29-27 at halftime and 37-35 at the end of three quarters.

Jose Arellano scored 17 points to lead three Roosevelt players in double figures. Jhonny Gomez had 15 points, making 5 of 7 free throws in the fourth quarter, and Ceasar Romo added 11 points for the L.A. City Section Division 2 champions (22-10)

Tyler Williams scored 13 points, Kai Morphy had seven and Bryan Trejo added five for Bishop (22-13), which finished runner-up in the 5AA Division of the CIF-SS and won its first state tournament game in program history.
