Solid defense and special teams play and 346 yards rushing combined to give Carpinteria a hard-fought non-league 14-13 win at Glendale Hoover Friday night.
Quarterback Talon Trumble led the way on the ground for the Warriors, continuing his strong running for 186 yards on 24 carries.
Erick Trejo, Matt Munoz and Isaac Flores rushed for 59, 52, and 49 yards, respectively.
David Alvarez made both key PATs — providing the winning edge, along with Israel Samaguey’s block of a Hoover PAT. Alvarez was also strong on kickoffs.
On defense, Samaguey also had five tackles for a loss and four quarterback sacks, “and played very strong defensive end for us,” Carpinteria coach Mario Robinson said.
With the win, the Warriors improve to 2-5 overall and remain 0-1 in Citrus Coast League play. Hoover is 6-2 with the loss.
“Very proud of the team for playing for four quarters,” Robinson said. “We need to continue this momentum as we get back into league play.”
Carpinteria hosts Fillmore next Friday in a Citrus Coast League contest. Game time is 7 p.m.
