The discovery of a body early Sunday has prompted an investigation into a possible hit-and-run collision on Highway 246 just east of Lompoc, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At approximately 6:15 a.m., CHP officers were dispatched to Highway 246, west of Sweeney Road, after receiving a report about a body that may have been involved in a traffic collision at an unknown date and time, Officer Keith Rogers told Noozhawk on Monday.

“At this time, it is unknown if a traffic collision occurred,” Rogers added. “The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol are working jointly to determine the direction of the investigation.”

The victim was a 34-year-old Lompoc man, the CHP said. His name will be released once his family has been notified about his death.

Lompoc police had alerted drivers that the segment of Highway 246 at the Robinson Bridge just east of the city would remain closed for several hours on Sunday morning.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the CHP’s Buellton area office at 805.688.5551.
