Buena scored on a fielder’s choice in the seventh inning and beat Dos Pueblos 2-1 in the Chargers’ softball season opener on Thursday.
Dos Pueblos got on the board first after a Sierra Laughner single and a run-scoring double by Bella Nuno in her first high school at-bat. Ashley Gerken singled but a strong throw from the center fielder kept Nuno at third.
The Chargers threatened again in the fourth but Buena turned a hard-hit ball with two runners on into a double play. One inning later DP loaded the bases but Buena got a strikeout to end the inning and the threat.
DP pitcher Ali Borden scattered five hits, struck out six and allowed one earned run.
“This was not the result we wanted but there are a lot of positives to take away,” said DP coach Mike Gerken. “Our pitching and defense was excellent and we hit the ball well. We got strong contributions from our freshmen, Mia Reveles and Bella Nuno. I’m looking forward to seeing what this squad can do.”
