A woman was struck by a vehicle and killed as she tried to run across Highway 101 in downtown Santa Barbara early Sunday, authorities say.
The collision was reported around 12:50 a.m. in the northbound lanes just west of State Street, Santa Barbara fire Capt. Jeremy Denton told Noozhawk.
He said three young adults in their 20s, all from out of town, were heading to the bars in downtown Santa Barbara when they decided to try to cross the freeway on foot.
One woman was hit by a vehicle, Denton said, adding that her companions witnessed the collision. They were unhurt, he said.
“They ended up actually pulling her off to the side and were doing CPR when (American Medical Response) arrived on scene, and unfortunately she was deceased,” he said.
The driver pulled over after the collision, he said.
Santa Barbara police and California Highway Patrol officers also responded to the scene, just west of the State Street underpass, where pedestrian and vehicle traffic travel under the freeway.
“The two friends were taken care of in the ambulance; they were not injured at all but obviously were in a pretty bad mental state and (they were transported) to the hospital just to give them some place to go since they’re from out of town,” Denton said.
The dead woman’s identity was not released pending notification of family. No other identities or details were available.
The CHP and Santa Barbara police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
