Sean Yamasaki of Dos Pueblos made Channel League wrestling history by becoming only the third wrestler to win four league individual championships on Saturday at the league finals in Lompoc.
Yamasaki captured the 134-pound weight class, beating Alex Davidson of Cabrillo by fall, for title No. 4. He joins his father, DP alum and DP assistant coach Mike Yamasaki (1979-82), and Ron Wilson of Camarillo (1968-71) as the only four-time champions.
Sean’s older brother, Aidan Yamasaki, was a three-time champion (2016-18).
It was a big day for Dos Pueblos wrestlers as they won four individual league titles and had eight CIF qualiiers for boys and had five girls claim championships.
Santa Barbara High had nine qualifiers and two champions for boys and two girls bring home crowns. San Marcos claimed one individual boys title and had three qualiiers.
The top three place finishers in each weight class advanced to the CIF Individual Championships.
Dos Pueblos senior Brennan Akley won the 128-pound title by pinning Benicio Garcia Holland of Santa Barbara
At 154 pounds, senior Conner Lee of the Chargers decisioned Rim Nenakhov of San Marcos, 5-3, to win his second straight league individual title. Senior Oscar Phillips won at 162 pounds.
DP freshman Cody Pearce qualified for CIF by taking third a 108 pounds.
Abram Perdomo (147), Aiden Jones (197) were runner-up finishers and Jaden Baptista (140) took third place.
Brandon Lazcano and Oscar Munoz were the champions from Santa Barbara. Lazcano pinned Levi Cooper of San Marcos in the 108-pound weight class and Munoz took the 138-pound title with a pin against Blake Rehder of Cabrillo.
Jorge Huerta was the lone champion from San Marcos, winning at 197 pounds in a 7-3 decision over Aiden Jones of Dos Pueblos.
“It feels really good to start the wrestling post season with a bang,” said DP coach Kenny Breaux. “Our preparation was the key ingredient to our team success. The whole coaching staff is special. I can’t thank them enough for the support and believing in our process.
“Having a first-year wrestler freshman Cody Pearce become a CIF qualifier is a real testament on how our upper classmates supported the freshman class this year. Cody worked extremely hard this season to achieve his goals. It took his family, coaches, teammates and, ultimately, belief in himself to become a CIF Qualifier.
“I am just as equally proud of all league champs and placers. They worked really hard to achieve their goals.”
In the league championships for girls, Natalie Sanchez (101 pounds), Isabel Regalado (116 pounds), Stephanie Esparza (121), Fiona Cate (131) and Isa Silva (160) won titles for Dos Pueblos. Regalado and Silva recorded first-period pins.
Five Chargers finished as runners-up. They were: Kimberly Silva (106), Kaelani Butler (113), Kelly Zamora (126), Leslye Sierra (137) and Paola De La Cruz (150).
Santa Barbara’s champions were Al’Asha Aparacio at 113 pounds and Alessandra Urquilla at 191. Urquilla, a sophomore, pinned Jazmine Andrade of Lompoc, while Aparacio defeated Butler by a major decision, 9-0.
Pepper Marks (237) and Katie MeeDer (118) were runner-up finishers for the Dons.
