The Santa Barbara Chamber Players will present a benefit concert featuring Gene Pokorny, principal tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Santa Barbara pianist Mi-Young Kim, 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 909 N. La Cumbre Road, Santa Barbara.

The concert is a fundraiser to support the Santa Barbara Chamber Players, whose mission is to provide high-quality classical music performances and outreach programs for the Santa Barbara community.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s finest tuba players Pokorny has been principal tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) since 1989.

In addition to his work with CSO, he has held principal tuba positions in the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Utah Symphony, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and LA Philharmonic. He has played on such movie soundtracks as “Jurassic Park” and “The Fugitive.”

Pokorny currently lectures and teaches at Roosevelt University, Northwestern University and the Pokorny Low Brass Seminar.

Pianist Kim is a musician and educator, specializing in collaborative piano, solo performance, and music direction. Based in Santa Barbara, she has cultivated a diverse career in performance and education.

She currently serves as the director of music at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Santa Barbara and is a faculty member at Westmont College.

She holds a master’s degree in collaborative piano from the University of Texas at Austin, and a master’s in piano performance from the University of Hartford.
