Bishop Diego boys volleyball clinched at least a share of the Tri-Valley League championship with a sweep of local rival Cate on Friday inside the Brick House, 25-13, 25-16, 25-18.

The Cardinals are now 19-5 overall and 8-0 against league opponents heading into another rivalry matchup with Laguna Blanca on Tuesday in Hope Ranch.

“Again, there were a lot of sloppy exchanges and not a ton of volleyball was being played due to serving errors on both sides,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “We’ve been taking more risks from the service line as we fine-tune things for the playoffs, and while the short-term ugliness of all the errors is tough to watch, we are seeing improvements.

Still a long way to go with the serving before we get to the end of the season. On the bright side, when we stick to our playbook, our offense looks pretty dynamic and gives opposing blockers a lot of trouble. We’re going to continue refining that with our hitters and see if we can get a little better before next week.”

The Cardinal duo of John Michael Flint and Damien Krautmann led the charge and combined for 13 kills and four aces. Meanwhile, Nico DeRosa served up four aces of his own.

Kingston Bustos and Tua Rojas contributed a combined seven kills and two aces as well.
