Bishop Diego boys volleyball swept a two-match desert series with Indio High and Xavier Prep in Indio this weekend.

The Cardinals began the weekend with a 25-10, 25-16, 25-14 sweep of Indio on Friday before sweeping Xavier Prep on Saturday, 25-16, 25-9, 25-18.

“This weekend was all about bonding as a team,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “We didn’t really focus much on winning this weekend.

“We wanted to see if we could learn a little bit more about a couple of different lineup combinations, but most importantly, head into the second half of the season stronger as a team off the court. I feel we accomplished the goal, and we had guys step up and play really well.”

John Michael Flint had a strong weekend, earning his 1,000th career kill against Xavier Prep in a match where he tallied 18 kills and seven aces.

Meanwhile, Mikey Gomez had a career-high six kills and Kingston Bustos tallied 12 assists in the win over Xavier Prep. Luca Moreno Murphy added 11 kills, while Luke Walters had 32 assists and 11 kills.

“I was happy for guys like Mikey Gomez, Ian Bartley, and George Velazquez, who don’t get a ton of playing time, but they had a really nice weekend,” Bennett said. “Guys like Tua Rojas and Kingston Bustos continue to improve, and we’re learning that we can maximize their athleticism in different positions.

“All in all, this was a great weekend with the guys, and we’re looking forward to two more matches this week before heading off to spring break.”
