Bishop Diego boys volleyball earned a four-set, non-league win over Bakersfield Christian on Friday inside the Brick House, 25-12, 25-16, 20-25, 25-12.

The Cardinals are now 11-3 overall heading into the seventh annual Cardinals Classic on Saturday inside the Brick House.

Bishop Diego will welcome 11 teams into its gym on Saturday, with play beginning at 8:30 a.m. Cate is the other local school competing.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how our guys keep improving this weekend and beyond,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said.

As for Friday’s win, Luca Moreno-Murphy did a little bit of everything for Bishop Diego with 13 kills, five aces, five digs, four assists and one block.

Nico DeRosa contributed nine kills, four aces and two blocks, while Tua Rojas added nine kills of his own.

“Bakersfield Christian had a long road trip today, but once they got going, they gave us a good battle,” Bennett said. “ I’m happy for our guys, too, because everyone played a role today. Luca and Nico played well, Tua and Luke (Walters) continue to improve their connection in the middle, which is going to pay off as the season continues.

“Even new guys like George Velazquez chipped in a block, Ian Bartley ended with two aces and three digs and Mikey Gomez had a good stretch of serving and dug a couple good balls in the back court.”
