Bishop Diego girls basketball continued its stellar season with a 54-29 victory over Thacher on Saturday in Ojai.

The Cardinals are now an impressive 18-2 overall and 4-0 against Tri-Valley League opponents.

The first half was a defensive struggle, as Bishop Diego went into the halftime break with an 18-9 lead. The Cardinals erupted out of halftime, outscoring Thacher 22-3 in the third to pull away for the win.

Bishop Diego was led by a 19-point effort from Eden Wynne, while Jaymi Coronado ended the night with 11 points.

“Eden did a great job on the defensive end tipping passes and making plays,” Bishop Diego head coach Jeff Burich said. “There was a nice balance in scoring from the other starters, but we need to do a better job of converting the opportunities given.

“Jaymi was really good on both ends of the court, setting up our offense while pressuring their point guard.”

The Cardinals will be on the road against St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.

Girls Soccer

The Bishop Diego girls soccer team dropped a non-league contest with Orcutt Academy by a score of 3-1 on Saturday in Santa Barbara.

Orcutt came out of the gates with two quick goals, but the Cardinals quickly refocused and held their opponent to a 1-1 draw for the rest of the game.

The lone Bishop Diego goal came from Mia Desales, while Lindsay Doyle racked up 24 saves in the goal.

“Our back line has really turned it on in the last few games,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “Much of the credit for that goes to the players and their willingness to buy into what Coach Leilani is asking of them back there. Keisi Calel was big for us today, and Abbie Hubbs stepped up as well.”

The Cardinals (2-7-1, 2-1-1 Frontier) will host Dunn on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
