Emma West Roldan is no stranger to starting over. Creating things appears to be her specialty.
Whether it’s delicious food or ingenious new businesses, West Roldan is the master of entrepreneurship.
Take her latest effort, for example. She opened Bodega Flower Girl near the corner of State and Gutierrez streets in Santa Barbara, and it has quickly emerged as one of the most popular places in town to grab a bite.
As a chef, she makes sandwiches, burritos and salads, all with local, fresh ingredients.
“It’s really focused on Farmers Market produce,” West Roldan said. “The focus is really on specialty produce and vegetarian-prepared food.”
Her shop, previously occupied by Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, features all glass walls facing the street and parking lot. Bright, sunny and spacious, patrons were enjoying lunch on a Thursday afternoon.
West Roldan was one of the founders of Satellite, a State Street restaurant that serves vegetarian food. She also has worked as a chef at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Hungry Cat and Elements restaurants.
Her new market seats about 10 people and features a variety of fresh food, including salads, soups, cheese, drinks and desserts.
“I want to be able to provide quality ingredients on a daily basis,” she said.
She subleases the new space, at 15 W. Guiterrez St., from Chocolate Maya next door.
The market is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day, except Wednesday.
“The food is definitely small-batch and fresh, so it’s constantly evolving,” she said.
New Doughnut Shop
A new doughnut shop is opening in the Calle Real Shopping Center in Goleta.
Drover’s Doughnuts has posted a sign on the window that it is hiring.
The sign features a doughnut wearing a cowboy hat. Two other Drover’s Doughnuts are in Buellton and Solvang.
Noe’s Cafe Opens
Noe’s Cafe has opened in Santa Barbara, and let’s hope it lasts longer than some of the recent eateries in that spot.
The restaurant popped up on Instagram and sells breakfast and lunch items. Items on the menu include pancakes, French toast, waffles, burgers, sandwiches and fish tacos.
The spot, at 129 E. Anapamu St., has seen The Courthouse Tavern, Cafe La Fonda and several others come and go in recent years.
