San Marcos boys volleyball defended its home court with a three-set sweep of Oxnard High in Thursday’s Channel League opener inside the Thunderhut.

The Royals had control from start to finish en route to the sweeping win, 25-12, 25-18, 25-18.

“It was a complete team effort for the Royals, who hit .417 as a team,” San Marcos head coach Dave Goss said.

Matteo Burdick and Owen Willer each ended with hitting percentages over .500 and tallied 12 and nine kills, respectively. Jamie Hetrick also contributed eight kills of his own.

Santa Barbara High 3, Buena 0

The Dons swept their Channel League opener with the Bulldogs on Thursday in Ventura, 25-8, 25-20, 25-10.

“After two tough losses this week, it was a blessing in disguise that we had a game tonight,” Santa Barbara High head coach Chad Arneson said. “I was able to use all of my players and experiment on different lineups.  It was good to end the week on a positive note and have the chance to get all the boys on the court.”

Reid Miller led the Dons with nine kills, while Levi Zapata tallied five kills. Maddox Denver and Jackson McDermott facilitated the offense to the tune of 17 and 11 assists, respectively.

Santa Barbara High (4-2, 1-0 Channel League) will be on the road against Newbury Park on Monday.

Dos Pueblos 3, Rio Mesa 0

The Chargers continued the trend with a sweep of the Spartans in their Channel League opener on Thursday at Sovine Gym, 25-13, 25-15, 25-20.

Dos Pueblos’ Ben Wojogbe hammered down 17 kills to lead all players, along with his eight digs. Meanwhile, Luca Shields had six kills and Evan Daugherty, Cyrus Jay and Caleb Damron ended with five kills apiece.

Keenan Bower and Kevin McGibben spread the balanced attack around with 22 and 12 assists, respectively.

“Kevin and Keenan were spreading the sets around nicely tonight. Their transition to the net is getting quicker with each day, we are proud of their play tonight,” Dos Pueblos head coach Ehren Hug said. 

“The middles, Cyrus and Caleb, were in rhythm tonight too, getting rewarded for the hard work getting up and available and closing blocks.”

The Chargers (6-2, 1-0 Channel League) will be on the road against Pacifica on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Malibu 3, Carpinteria 0

The Warriors fell in straight sets to the Sharks on Thursday in Malibu, 15-25, 13-25, 19-25.

“We traveled to their gym knowing it would be a challenge,” Carpinteria High head coach Favian Muralles said. “Although we lost, the boys fought hard throughout the match and used it as a learning experience against a strong opponent.”

Alan Maya recorded seven kills and 12 digs for the Warriors, while Cole Rowbottom added four kills and Alari Rodriguez scooped up 24 digs.

Carpinteria High is now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in Citrus Coast League action.
