After 224 years of service, Caren Rager will step down from her role as Chrisman executive director and president at The Granada Theatre, concluding a significant chapter in the organization’s history.
“I am proud of the work we have accomplished together during my time at The Granada, and it is time for me to pursue other activities in my life,” Rager said.
In 2002, Rager was recruited by Michael Towbes, Sarah and Roger Chrisman, Sara Miller McCune, Santa Barbara Mayor Harriet Miller, and other civic leaders to serve in a supporting leadership role within the organization.
“Over time, she was entrusted with increasing responsibility, leading to her appointment as executive director and president in 2018. During her tenure, The Granada continued to grow as one of the region’s leading performing arts venues,” Granada officials said.
Rager was part of the leadership team that guided the theater’s landmark restoration, returning the building to its original 1924 character while modernizing it as a state-of-the-art performing arts center ahead of its 2008 reopening.
The effort preserved a historic architectural landmark and strengthened its future as a cultural home for Santa Barbara.
During her tenure, Rager guided the organization through times of celebration and challenge, helping strengthen the organization’s operations and community partnerships.
“Serving this historic institution and the Santa Barbara community has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my professional life,” Rager said. “I am especially grateful for the lasting relationships we have built with our resident companies.
“Their artistry and shared commitment have shaped The Granada’s growth and enriched Santa Barbara’s cultural life in countless ways.”
“Caren has been a dedicated and steady presence at The Granada for more than two decades,” said Palmer Jackson, Jr., board chair/CEO.
“During her time as executive director, she worked closely with staff, resident companies, and the board to support the theater’s daily operations and long-term stability,” Jackson said. “We are grateful for her many contributions and wish her continued success.”
“I remember the very first day we hired Caren. She came on part-time to do a simple task: take board minutes, organize meetings, and keep track of the board records,” said Sarah Chrisman, life trustee. “It didn’t take long to recognize her capabilities, dedication and drive far exceeded this straightforward job description.
“Over the next 24 years, her job responsibilities increased exponentially, and Caren always stepped up to the plate. From accounting to theater operations, legal to fundraising, she earned the position of executive director.
“Her contributions and dedication from day one were truly fundamental to the success of this project. She will be sorely missed in her role at The Granada by the entire board, staff, and Santa Barbara community.”
Rager also expressed appreciation for the dedicated team that has supported The Granada’s success.
“It has been a privilege to work alongside a talented staff, a devoted Board of Directors, committed community partners, and generous donors,” Rager said. “I am grateful to have been part of The Granada’s ongoing story.”
Due to Rager’s institutional knowledge, The Granada has invited her to provide transitional support in an advisory capacity to assist the board and staff with the transition.
Moving forward, leadership responsibilities will be managed within the theater’s existing structure, with Jackson continuing his oversight of the organization.
