Carpinteria High baseball struggled in the late stages in a 13-2 loss to Santa Ynez High on Saturday at John Calderwood Field in Carpinteria.

The game was locked in a 2-2 tie heading into the sixth inning, but the Pirates erupted for five runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh to pull away for the lopsided win.

“Saturday baseball is great, and having the chance to play a high-caliber team like Santa Ynez was a welcome challenge,” Carpinteria High head coach Pat Cooney said. “We saw some really good things as our team is almost back to full strength after a bout with injury and illness.

“The score was not indicative of the quality of play in the game. Santa Ynez can swing it, and they play catch, so we knew we would have to play really well for seven innings and get some breaks to have a chance.  We had a little bit of bad luck in key spots, and that’s all it takes to really change the complexion of a baseball game.”

Jonah Hernandez and Sam Medel led the Warrior offense with two hits and a run scored apiece. Meanwhile, Dallas Bartholic roped a ground-rule double and handled the bulk of the pitching duties for Carpinteria.

The Warriors will host Golden Valley in a non-league matchup on Thursday.
