Carpinteria High baseball struggled to keep up with Hueneme in a 5-0 loss on Wednesday at John Calderwood Field in Carpinteria.

The Warriors (9-2, 3-2 Citrus Coast League) and the Vikings (6-7, 4-1 CCL) came into the day tied for first place in the Citrus Coast League, but Hueneme went back home with sole possession of the top spot.

“We were hit with some adversity today and we did not respond particularly well,” Carpinteria High head coach Pat Cooney said. “Even before the first play of the game, our confidence was shaky.

“Hueneme is playing their best baseball coming off a big win at Santa Paula and applied a lot of pressure throughout.  We got involved in the middle of the game but we had given the Vikings too much room.”

Carpinteria was held hitless through five innings until Gabe Martinez and Micah Smith tallied the lone hits of the day for their squad.

The Warrior defense struggled in the loss with a season-high eight errors, which led to three unearned runs. Dallas Bartholic took the mound for 5 ⅔ innings for Carpinteria, while Charlotte Cooney fired 1 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief.

“We’re a little bit ‘snake bit’ in that we have had some bad luck and a bunch of obstacles to navigate in the last few days,” Pat Cooney said. “It would be great if we could right the ship and generate some movement back in the right direction.”

The Warriors will look to bounce back with a rematch at Hueneme on Friday.
