Carpinteria High girls basketball pulled out a 57-54 victory in a non-league matchup against Foothill Tech on Monday in Carpinteria.

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout, as neither team held a lead larger than five points at any time.

Foothill Tech held the advantage for the entirety of the first half, leading 13-11 after the first and 26-25 heading into halftime.

The Warriors came out of the break energized, outscoring Foothill Tech 12-9 in the third to go up 37-35 with one quarter to play.

The fourth quarter was also a seesaw affair, with Carpinteria making plays down the stretch to escape with the three-point win.

“We made [Foothill Tech] earn every bit of the points they scored,” Carpinteria High head coach Henry Gonzales. “Gia Sharma, Jamaica Cook, Charlotte Cooney and Leona McClellan battled inside, challenging and grabbing rebounds and playing defense on the big girls.

“The key to our victory was our grit and willingness to compete at a high sustained level. We played good, consistent basketball for a full 32 minutes.”

Cooney and Cook each tallied double-doubles for the Warriors in the win. Cooney ended with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Cook collected 15 points and 11 rebounds. Leona McClellan also chipped in 13 points.

Carpinteria (12-7, 5-2 Citrus Coast League) will return to league play against Nordhoff on Friday.
