Carpinteria High track & field kicked off its spring season with a strong performance at the four-team Rincon Races & Field meet on Saturday.
The Warrior girls team scored 90 points to take first place, while the boys squad totaled 53 points and fell just five points behind first-place Fillmore.
Vivian Huskins shined for the Carpinteria girls with a pair of school records. She tied the school record in the 100-meter with a time of 12.79 seconds, and broke a 27-year-old 200-meter record by finishing in 25.99 seconds.
Huskins was also joined by Izzy Scott, Isla Moore and Kaydance Gardner to win the 4×100 relay race with a time of 51.22 seconds.
“Vivian has done an outstanding job preparing herself for the season,” Carpinteria High head coach Van Latham said. “She has been doing track workouts before her soccer practices since November. It is very gratifying to see her set school records in the first meet of the season. She is very deserving.”
The Warrior girls swept the hurdle races, as Halleh Gahan and Izzy Scott won the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles, respectively, with times of 19.50 and 51.16 seconds, respectively.
Giarys Gomez captured first place in the 400-meter as an individual at 1:07.63, and she anchored the first-place 4×400 relay team with Moore, Scott and Kiana Kia.
As for the boys, Carpinteria’s Jaxon Gentzel earned first-place individual finishes in the 110-meter high hurdles (20.47) and the 300-meter hurdles (57.54).
Max Soto also had a strong performance for the Warriors with first-place showings in the 1,600-meter race at 4:39 and the 2,400-meter race at 7:42.
“A chamber of commerce day produced many strong performances for Carpinteria,” Latham said. “It is encouraging to see quite a few personal records in addition to the school records in the first meet of the year.
“We were well prepared for today. It will give us momentum into our league opening dual meet against Santa Paula next Thursday.”
