Cate and Carpinteria High track & field competed in a crosstown rivalry meet on Thursday at the brand new Whiting Family Track at Meldman Field in Carpinteria.
Thursday’s meet marked the first hosted by the Rams since 2013, when they hosted a dual meet with Thacher.
“It has been a while since we have had the opportunity to host a home track meet,” Cate athletic director Wade Ransom said. “What makes this meet even more significant is that we were able to host Carpinteria High School.
“Carp has been a great neighbor to Cate for years and has hosted us many times for small meets, the Russell Cup and the CIF-SS Prelims. It felt wonderful to host them at our place for the first home meet since 2013.”
The Rams had several double individual event winners in Sophie Blank (800 meter, 1,600 meter), Ati Zwieback (800 meter, 1,600 meter), Sloan Harwell (100 meter, 200 meter) and Jackson Steele (200 meter, 400 meter).
Gwen McTigue and Nika Iverson also took home individual first-place finishes for Cate in the 300 hurdles and long jump, respectively.
Meanwhile, Blank, Zwieback, Harwell and Steele all contributed to first-place relay teams for the Rams.
As for Carpinteria High, Issac Sanchez took home first place in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, while his teammate Jaxon Gentzel finished second in both races.
Merely Avalos captured the shot put and discus victories for the Warriors, while Leighla Richter won the 100 hurdles and Katia Nikolov came out on top in the 400 meter.
“Coach Van Latham and his staff are truly great coaches and neighbors,” Cate head coach Kyle Mason said. “Their program is talented and well coached, and we were happy to host them this afternoon for a competitive and friendly meet.”
Cate and Carpinteria High will meet again for the Russell Cup on Saturday, April 18 at Carpinteria High.
