The 20-year-old Santa Barbara woman accused of attempting to smother her newborn baby has been charged with attempted murder and inflicting corporal injury to a child.
Last Tuesday, Santa Barbara police officers, city firefighters and American Medical Response ambulance personnel were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1100 block of San Andres Street for a woman who had just given birth to an unresponsive baby boy, police said Tuesday afternoon.
Roommates had discovered Lopez-Hernandez and the baby unresponsive inside the apartment. The two were immediately transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, police said.
After lifesaving measures were initiated, the baby regained a pulse and began breathing, police said.
Detectives determined the mother reportedly attempted to smother the baby, police said, and arrested Lopez-Hernandez.
On Thursday, the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office charged Lopez-Hernandez with one felony count of attempted murder, alleging that she personally inflicted great bodily injury on her baby.
The District Attorney’s Office also charged Lopez-Hernandez with one felony count of corporal injury to a child, alleging that she inflicted cruel and inhuman corporal punishment and injury resulting in a traumatic condition to the baby.
The charges also include special allegations of great bodily injury to a young child and that the victim was particularly vulnerable.
Lopez-Hernandez is being held in the Northern Branch Jail on a $1 million bail, according to Sheriff’s Office records.
She is scheduled to appear in Santa Barbara County Superior Court Tuesday morning for an arraignment hearing.
