A hazardous materials investigation occurred Monday at the Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex after an unknown chemical was found inside a cell, authorities said.

Shortly before 11 a.m., personnel from the Lompoc Fire Department were dispatched to the 3900 block of Klein Boulevard.

Santa Barbara County Fire Department and Vandenberg Space Force Base Fire Department personnel also responded to the incident to assist at the scene.

Additionally, U.S. Bureau of Prisons staff provided assistance.

The incident involved the discovery of an unknown chemical in a cell inside the Federal Correctional Institution II (formerly U.S. Penitentiary), according to Lompoc Fire Battalion Chief Louis Farah Jr., who also served as incident commander.

Firefighters retrieved the suspicious substance and handed it off to the FBI for analysis and identification, Farah added.

No roads in the area were closed during the incident which was wrapped up about four hours after emergency personnel responded to the scene.
