A coroner’s investigation is underway following the death over the weekend of a student at a UC Santa Barbara residence hall in Isla Vista.
UCSB police and other emergency personnel responded at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday to the Santa Catalina residence hall, formerly Francisco Torres, at 6850 El Colegio Road, said Sgt. Dan Wilson of the UCSB Police Department.
(Our story originally stated incorrectly that the death occurred on Friday.)
The male student, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was found unresponsive in his dorm room, Wilson told Noozhawk.
Officers who arrived first on scene undertook life-saving efforts, as did paramedics, but the student was declared dead at the scene.
The cause and manner of death were under investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau, according to sheriff’s Lt. Robert Minter.
Most students had just moved into the residence halls last week for the beginning of the fall quarter, which started Thursday, Wilson said.
“It was very tragic for the family and everyone in the community,” he added.
No further information was available.
