David Richard Johnson, formerly of Goleta, passed away Nov. 25, 2025, in Cottage Grove, Oregon, at the age of 75.

Born to Frank and Florence (Turner) Johnson in Helena, Montana, David grew up to become a cornerstone of both his family and his community.

In December 1953, David’s parents moved the family to Santa Barbara. David attended San Marcos High School, and excelled in track and cross-country, eventually graduating in 1968.

He continued his education at Santa Barbara Community College, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Missoula, ultimately earning a bachelor’s degree in political science.

David’s professional life was marked by successful sales careers in insurance, the printing industry, and pharmaceuticals. Following his retirement in 2008, his preference for a cooler climate led him to settle in Cottage Grove, Oregon.

As a proud veteran’s ally, David served as president of his local Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 3473, and as supreme president of the Military Order of the Cootie Auxiliary. David’s dedication to service extended to his time with the Goleta Rotary Club and significant involvement with the Elks Lodge.

Outside his professional life, David dedicated himself to an array of interests. He was an avid reader of history and mystery books. His love of sports was reflected through golfing, refereeing high school football, umpiring baseball from youth leagues through high school, and serving as president of the Dos Pueblos Little League.

David’s creativity shone through in his talent for making jewelry and woodworking. He also found joy in cooking, especially preparing soups for his local church.

Moreover, his love for travel and the outdoors was reflected in his numerous cruises, exotic excursions, extensive cross-country drives, and regular fishing and camping trips.

David is lovingly remembered by his partner of 15 years Wanda K. Mosegard; sons Michael (Maily) Johnson of Goleta, Matthew Johnson of Santa Barbara, and Christopher (Tamarin) Johnson of Goleta; sister Linda Weston of Santa Maria; brother John Johnson of Destin, Florida; four adoring granddaughters Jaden, Jordyn, Bella and Magnolia; as well as his former spouse Gail Johnson-Plowman.

David will be remembered not only as a committed member of his community, but also as a cherished partner, father, grandfather and friend.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25 at Santa Barbara Elks Lodge, 150 N. Kellogg Ave., Goleta.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honor David, to consider a donation to their local Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
