A man was arrested Saturday afternoon following an incident that began with a domestic-disturbance call on Santa Barbara’s Eastside, and ended with a police pursuit and a crash on the freeway, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Officers were dispatched at about 12 p.m. to the 100 block of North Salinas Street for a report of an unknown type of disturbance, said Lt. Nathan Beltran.
“While officers were en route, additional information was received indicating the incident involved a domestic disturbance between a male and a female,” Beltran said, adding that the man had left prior to the officers’ arrival.
“Shortly thereafter, the male half returned while driving recklessly and threatened officers,” Beltran said. “Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the suspect fled while driving recklessly.”
Officers engaged in a short pursuit, but it was terminated in the interest of public safety, Beltran said.
Other law-enforcement agencies were given a description of the vehicle, a silver Dodge 2500 pickup, which was located by California Highway Patrol officers in downtown Santa Barbara.
They attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect again failed to yield, resulting in a pursuit that continued through the city and entered northbound Highway 101.
The pursuit concluded when the pickup crashed on the freeway offramp at Hope Avenue.
The driver, whose name was not released, was arrested without further incident, Beltran said.
“This remains an active investigation, and charges are pending,” Beltran said late Saturday afternoon. “At this time, there is no ongoing threat to public safety.”
