Santa Ynez boys basketball pulled away in the second half to earn a 74-49 rivalry win over Dunn on Tuesday in Los Olivos.
“It was a great small town rivalry game, the gym was packed and there was a lot of energy,” Dunn head coach Ray Vazquez said.
The Earwigs got out to a strong start, leading 19-15 after the opening quarter. Santa Ynez responded with a strong run in the second to steal a 31-27 lead at halftime.
The Pirates carried that momentum into the second half, outscoring Dunn 17-6 in the third and continuing to pull away in the fourth for the win.
Santa Ynez’s Jude Pritchard led all scorers with 21 points to go along with five rebounds. Meanwhile, Gael Villalobos tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Wesley Satterthwaite fell one board short of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Lucas Ollenburger filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
As for the Earqwigs, Walker Vazquez and Dylan Shomes paced the team with 14 points apiece, while Jayden Alabi chipped in 13 points.
Dunn will take on Laguna Blanca in its league opener on Wednesday.
Channel Islands 51, Carpinteria High 31
The Warriors fell to Channel Islands in a Citrus Coast League matchup on Tuesday.
The first half was a close one, as the Carpinteria defense came to play early and trailed by just seven points heading into halftime.
However, Channel Islands found its groove down the stretch and pulled away for the 20-point win.
Sammy Medel was in the middle of the action for the Warriors, leading the team in both scoring and assists.
“It has been a challenge this first season incorporating culture, but I am here for the long haul, the good and the bad,” Carpinteria High head coach Terrell Griffin said. “This program will continue to get better with the small steps.”
