The Dos Pueblos and San Marcos wrestling squads each competed in non-league tournaments out of town this weekend.
While the Charger boys and girls were both in action, the Royals only had their girls team competing.
“This weekend, the girls and boys teams tested themselves at two of the toughest tournaments in California,” Dos Pueblos head coach Matt Bernard said.
“This was a great opportunity for them to wrestle against some of the best in the state and really see where they’re at prior to the postseason and state qualifying tournaments.”
Dos Pueblos
The Charger boys collected 40 team points and ended the weekend 38th out of 82 teams at the Temecula Valley Battle for the Belt.
Ethan Ono led the way for Dos Pueblos, going 6-2 with five wins by fall in the 215-pound division to collect a fifth-place finish and 25 team points.
Meanwhile, Brandon Velasquez went 2-1 at 165 pounds and both Seamue Fergus and Andrew Gilligan tallied one win at 157 and 132 pounds, respectively.
The Dos Pueblos girls team competed in the Dick Morris ‘Big Kahuna’ Girls Memorial Tournament at Cerritos College, finishing in 60th out of 90 teams with 30.5 team points.
Lesly De La Rosa Reyes (140 lbs.) and Ariana Valladares (100 lbs.) each went 4-2 on the tournament to earn 13 team points, but fell just short of placing.
Sabrina Borgia rounded out the Dos Pueblos wrestlers with a 1-2 showing in the 120-pound division.
“The coaching staff and I are proud of where the team is at and the attitude they bring to every match,” Bernard said. “Ethan is constantly looking for ways to improve his wrestling and makes necessary in-match adjustments to figure out what works against the opponent he’s wrestling.
“[Ariana] leverages her superior technique while Lesly pushes an unrelenting pace – it’s really fun working with these unique and very different wrestlers to help them achieve their goals.”
The Chargers will head across town for a dual meet against Santa Barbara High on Wednesday.
San Marcos

The Royals had five wrestlers competing in the fifth annual Big Kahuna Classic this weekend, placing 66th as a team.
Ingrid Vargas led the charge for San Marcos, placing seventh in her weight class after she defeated the No. 2 seed as an unseeded wrestler.
Angelique Silva also turned in a strong showing with a win over the ninth seed and a 3-2 overall record.
Sophia Garnica went 1-2 on the weekend, while Keilani Pozos and Yasmin Cisneros each represented the Royals as well.
“All of the girls left it all on the mat and that’s always a win in my book,” San Marcos head coach Jesus Romero said. “In tournaments at this caliber, the rollercoaster of emotions for everyone involved is unexplainable unless one witnesses it firsthand.”
