Dos Pueblos boys and girls wrestlers tested themselves against elite competition from throughout the state and the country at the Reno Tournament of Champions over the weekend in Nevada.

Five Chargers advanced to the second day of action and three boys made it to the ā€œblood round,ā€ with a chance to place.

ā€œThis was a great tournament for our wrestlers,ā€ said DP coach Matthew Bernard. ā€œThey saw high-level wrestling, many different looks from various states, and were exposed to some nationally ranked competition.ā€

The five wrestlers that advanced to the second day were Andrew Gilligan, Ethan Ono, Ariana Valladares (via winner’s bracket quarterfinals), Lesly De La Rosa Reyes, Jennifer Salcedo (via winner’s bracket quarterfinals). Gilligan posted three pins and four matches at 132 pounds, Ono won five matches, three of them by fall. De La Rosa Reyes had two pins.

In team scoring, the DP girls placed 38th out of 56 teams and the boys finished 73rd out of 111 teams.

ā€œThe wrestlers will take the lessons learned from this tournament into the second half of the season and their road to state,ā€ said Bernard.
