A man was killed Wednesday evening in a single-vehicle crash on Figueroa Mountain Road in the mountains above the Santa Ynez Valley, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 5:15 p.m. to a report of a vehicle over the side on the 8700 block of the narrow and winding mountain road in the San Rafael Mountains.
“The vehicle was witnessed leaving the roadway and traveling approximately 300 feet down the hillside,” fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.
California Highway Patrol officers arrived on scene first, removed the driver from the vehicle, and initiated CPR, Safechuck said.
However, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Firefighters used a rope rescue system to safely bring the deceased topside to the roadway.
His name was not released pending notification of relatives.
The crash was under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
