A fire involving a battery pack for an electric bicycle was quickly contained before it could damage a house in Carpinteria Sunday morning.

Personnel from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District responded at approximately 10:45 a.m. to an incident on the 4800 block of Ninth Street.

A lithium ion battery pack for an e-bike caught fire while charging outside a home, according to Fire Marshal Michael LoMonaco.

“Luckily, it didn’t extend to the home,” he added.

A deputy from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene first and began dousing the burning battery pack with a fire extinguisher.

No one was injured in the incident, he said.

The battery was destroyed, but the bike was not damaged.

The incident served as a reminder that lithium ion batteries should not be left unattended while charging and people should follow the manufacturers’ recommendations while charging them, LoMonaco said.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week events for agencies throughout the county in October focused on the potential dangers of lithium ion batteries and educated people about precautions needed to avoid blazes.
